Local things to do in San Francisco during summer

Writer's picture: Sabrina ZambranoSabrina Zambrano

When you hear about San Francisco, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? For me, when I was a kid, I was (and still) obsessed with Victorian houses and the Golden Gate bridge. I also think I became more obsessed with it, when I watched the show called "Charmed" and I loved it! Even though the house they filmed in is not even in San Francisco.

I have been living in San Francisco for about 4 years and that is why I took the liberty to write this blog post. I have explored the city from the most touristic places to some of the hidden gems. These are some of the places I think would be wonderful to visit during summer

 16th avenue tiled steps.

A beautiful artistic gem and one of hidden gems in San Francisco. It has an amazing view of the city and it's inspired by the famous stair steps in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). It was created with the help of ver 300 community volunteers. Even though it's really hard to get there by public transportation, at the end it's completely worth it. Be sure to bring your jacket, because even when it's "warm" the wind there is really strong. There is also a place to sit and enjoy the view but, if you drive there be careful because a lot of car robberies happen.

Sutro bath.

It was a project made by Adolf Sutro, who was a former major in San Francisco. Sutro baths was like a "club" with 8 different pools and each one with different temperatures. At the beginning of World War I the popularity of the baths diminished. They tried to save it, but at the end it was left for destruction. Around 1964 it was completely `destroyed by a fire. Now a day there's only the ruins of a very interesting project once a San Franciscan had. Sutro bath also has an amazing view and a restaurant where you can have dinner and enjoy the sunset.

Ocean beach.

If you want to take a break from the chaotic downtown, Ocean Beach is the place to visit. You can catch the sunset and walk along the beach, ride a bike or simply just sit with your friends next to a bonfire while you watch the sun come down and then sing and talk under the starts. Ocean beach is a great place to surf and there is a place where you can rent and get some surfing lessons.

Conservatory of flowers.

It the oldest building located in the Golden Gate Park. This green house, showcases tropical and seasonal flowers. Even when it is not huge I think it's completely worth going. The ticket price is $9 for general public and with student id is $6. If you love taking creative pictures, this is the right place to go! it is so beautiful that you are going to want to go back.

Dolores park.

It was a jewish cemetery before the city bought it. I can't think of a more diverse place to go in the city. In dolores park during sunny days, you can find people playing around, jamming, dogs running around, picnic and just people being themselves. But, what I love the most from this park is, the amazing view of the city. Dolores park is also located next to one of the most colorful districts in San Francisco which is called Castro.

San Francisco is a pretty diverse city so when you visit, come with an open mind and expect the unexpected!
